Federal holidays

Home / United States Print This Page Print Recommend us

A federal holiday means most federal offices are closed on these days. Also, many employers give their employees a holiday on those days. Schools are also closed in observance of the holidays. Banks and store are closed or have shorter hours on federal holidays.

How the holiday is observed if the holiday is on a Saturday or Sunday? When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday. On the other hand, the holiday is observed on the following Monday if it falls on a Sunday.

Here is a list of official federal government holidays:

Holiday Observed on
New Year’s Day January 1st
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. 3rd Monday in January
Presidents’ Day 3rd Monday in February
Memorial Day Last Monday in May
Independence Day July 4th
Labor Day 1st Monday in September
Columbus Day 2nd Monday in October
Veterans Day November 11th
Thanksgiving Day 4th Thursday in November
Christmas Day December 25th

If you need to conduct any business with the government or any other place on these holidays, make sure to check ahead (online or call) if the office is open. This will save you a trip.
